Moogsoft surveyed attendees at Atlassian Summit 2017 about the challenges they face and the tools they’re using to solve them.
The Atlassian Summit in San Jose had many big reveals, one of them being the company’s new logo! I’d like to think the logo represents two people high-fiving! 🙏
In the spirit of teamwork, as usual the Moogsoft team conducted our 2017 Monitoring Survey at the Atlassian Summit. Read on to see what we found…
Over 60% of participants are still struggling with monitoring coverage for their entire production stack.
Atlassian Summit Summary
Those we surveyed at this year’s Atlassian Summit were all over the place with their job titles. This is very different to the other surveys I recently conducted — VMworld was attended largely SysAdmins, at Cisco Live we met predominantly network engineers, and attendees at Velocity and Monitorama were mostly DevOps focused.
Though I did find one similarity to the VMworld & Cisco Live respondents: ZERO percent of the Atlassian folks were DevOps / Site Reliability Engineers, which was definitely not the case with the Monitorama and Velocity Surveys.
The types of companies in attendance at Atlassian Summit also closely matched the types of companies we interacted with at VMworld and Cisco Live — mostly large corporations in finance, telecommunications and healthcare.
- The top 3 monitoring tools used by Atlassian attendees are Splunk, SolarWinds, and Nagios
- The top 3 monitoring challenges are the lack of a monitoring coverage, alert correlation, and collaboration across teams
- The average level of alert volume per month most commonly cited by people we surveyed was in the hundreds
- The average number of P1 / SEV-1 incidents per month cited by most of the companies we surveyed was 3-5 per month
- On a scale of 1-10 — 1 being the most reactive company, and 10 being the most proactive — most respondents scored their companies at 9
The Most Interesting Fact
For the first time in the history of the Moogsoft Monitoring Survey, the top monitoring challenge for Atlassian attendees was the concern that they don’t have adequate coverage to monitor their entire IT ecosystems.
So why would these folks want more context in their monitoring ecosystem?
One explanation is that, according to our survey, 50% of them are dealing with 3-5 P1 / SEV-1 incidents (wide-scale business impacting problems) per month. I can imagine that is a lot of downtime and is not helping companies’ goals of “5 9s“!
Here’s the most counterintuitive part of the whole Monitoring Survey:
When asked about proactiveness — on a scale of 1-10, 1 being the most reactive company, 10 being the most proactive company — where they ranked their companies, 43.7% of Atlassian attendees said their company is extremely proactive (9/10) when it comes to alert/event management.
So this begs the question: Why do Atlassian attendees think that they’re an extremely proactive bunch when they suffer from 3-5 P1s every single month? Last time I checked, experiencing monthly site-wide outages is reserved for only the most reactive companies.
The Atlassian Summit 2017 Monitoring Survey
83.3% of our survey respondents said that they don’t have an Event Manager. It’s also interesting to note that, among respondents who do have an event manager in place, only some of the legacy vendors made the cut — BMC and CA are missing, while HP and IBM had some representation at this San Jose show.
60% of the participants said that their application performance monitor of choice is AppDynamics. AppD has been leading the APM pack for the past three Monitoring Surveys (AppD dominated at VMworld & Cisco Live as well).
Another first for the Moogsoft Monitoring Survey: A full 100% of respondents said that they use SolarWinds to monitor their network. This tool continues to be the most popular NPM product in our 2017 survey.
Nagios continues to be the #1 most used infrastructure monitoring tool, with over 37.5% of the respondents saying that they use it. With the exception of Cisco Live, Nagios has been the dominating monitoring tool in every single 2017 Moogsoft Monitoring Survey to date.
Splunk continues to hold the top spot for log monitoring tools, with 75% of interviewees saying that they use it. (I hope this makes Splunk feel a bit better after the news that Symantec no longer wants to acquire the company because they think it’s “overvalued.” Ouch!)
We have a tie in this edition of the survey’s synthetic monitoring category! Catchpoint and Keynote (owned by Dynatrace) are tied for the #1 most used synthetic monitoring tool. The previous winners in this category — Apica, Pingdom and HP Sitescope — didn’t fare too well this time around.
70% of Atlassian respondents still use email to notify the right teams of an incident. It’s shocking that so many companies are still using email as their main notification tool. This is the second time in the 2017 Moogsoft Monitoring Survey that email has beat out best-in-breed notification tools like xMatters, PagerDuty and OpsGenie in this Monitoring Survey.
Surprise surprise, Jira is the most used ticketing tool at the Atlassian event. (Seriously, though, Jira always performs well in this survey, no matter where we conduct it.)
29.3% of attendees say that they use Skype for internal communication.
What’s more interesting is that we might have a new player on the scene soon: Atlassian’s Stride. It promises to revolutionize the way teams talk, meet, interact and collaborate. Maybe we’ll see Stride start to pop up in our Monitoring Surveys in the future.
Java holds onto the #1 position in our language poll with 84.6% of respondents saying it’s their preferred language. Surprisingly, C++ is the second most used language.
Not surprisingly, 78.5% of those surveyed said that their company hosts at least some of their services on Amazon Web Services.
Atlassian Summit Conclusion
“The days when the boss is the smartest person in the room are over. My team tells me that every day,” Atlassian co-founder Scott Farquhar said in his keynote this year.
